What are you afraid of?
Me?
I hate spiders.
Thousands of people are afraid of snakes.
What about you?
The number of people afraid of public speaking is magnanimous.
There's a joke that says more people are afraid of public speaking
than they are of death.
The joke finishes by saying: this means that at a funeral, more people would choose to be
dead in the coffin than speaking in the pulpit.
I'm more afraid of spiders than I am public speaking.
My fear of spiders boarders the ridiculous.
The other day, I happened to wander into an intriguing African Art and gifts store
in Oakland, CA called Sankofa African Arts and Jewelry.
There in the jewelery case was a spider
made of silver.
Its long sliver-of-sliver legs gave me the shivers; however,
its back, covered in resplendent rhinestones, drew me closer.
I stared at the pin and thought about the power of fear.
Here I was looking at an inanimate object whose design was dazzling
yet its mere shape invoked dread.
Suddenly, I decided I was going to purchase this silver, shimmering,
phobia-inducing pin.
It was affordable, but moreover, it represented a key theme of mine:
Facing Your Fears.
What is a key element of facing fear?
Choosing Courage.
Does choosing courage demand first releasing all fear?
Courageousness is not synonymous with fearlessness.
Being courageous means choosing to act with courage in the face of fear.
Dare to wear Fear on your chest.
Faithfully follow your dreams, step by step, and
Let God do the rest.
Remember the Tale of the Silver Spider
(by Esther Y Chambers)
A story of a jeweled spider who granted riches to
all who'd choose courage to take it, faith and God
on their journey, step by step,
making their dreams come true.
What act of courage will you do today on your way to
making your dreams come true?
